Orthodontic Assessments

Your children’s dentist will monitor their teeth for developmental issues, but they’ll likely refer them to us for a comprehensive orthodontic assessment. At Dr. Cynthia Wong’s Orland Park office, we’ve overseen many children’s orthodontic therapy, providing them with a lifetime of healthy, beautiful teeth. To help families understand the importance of orthodontic assessments, we thought it would be a good idea to describe what to expect.

We’re going to use digital x-rays to determine where a child’s adult teeth are likely to erupt. From the time they’re around seven years old, we can reasonably predict whether their wisdom teeth are at risk of being impacted and if the other teeth are becoming too crowded. However, orthodontic therapy usually does not begin at this age outside of extreme circumstances, such as breathing difficulty or facial deformity. We’ll also ask children questions about whether they have difficulty chewing, whether their jaws or teeth are often sore, and whether they feel fatigued. These questions can help us to determine whether misalignments might be a contributing factor to temporomandibular joint disorder and sleep apnea. We’ll also inspect the wear patterns of their enamel for signs of nighttime teeth grinding. After making an impression of a child’s mouth and running the x-rays through our modeling software, we’ll be able to develop a treatment plan and demonstrate to them and the parents any particular concerns we may have about the future movement of their teeth and jaws.

Retained Baby Teeth

The development of the adult teeth in a child’s jaw is of great concern to us at Dr. Cynthia Wong’s Orland Park orthodontic office. We recommend that children get their first orthodontic assessment when they are about seven years old, at which point a few adult teeth will have come in but the jawbones remain pliable. Even when the adult teeth come in without complications, some correction is often necessary. But there are also cases in which the baby teeth fail to fall out.

Normally, as adult teeth push toward the gum line, the roots of the baby teeth dissolve. This is what allows them to fall out just before adult teeth come in to replace them. But the tooth roots may fail to dissolve if the adult tooth is coming in at the wrong angle or out of place, resulting in a person having two sets of teeth. This condition most commonly affects the lower incisors. The baby teeth would usually be extracted because of the threat of overcrowding they present and the difficulty of cleaning them, and the adult teeth would likely need to be realigned.

In some people, certain adult teeth simply do not develop. The most common instances of this are the upper lateral incisors. In these cases, the baby teeth would not fall out and would be extracted. These patients may require orthodontic spacers to keep their teeth from migrating together and filling the gap while they are undergoing preparations to replace the missing teeth with implants.

Adult Orthodontics

Dr. Cynthia Wong provides orthodontic care for adolescents and adults.  It is often recommended to start treatment on an adolescent patient once all the permanent teeth have come in, but adults can still get great results from orthodontic care.  There are several options for adults beginning orthodontic treatment, and the best one for you will depend on what needs to be corrected.

To correct bite issues and straighten teeth, the traditional braces method includes brackets on the teeth and connecting wires that are tightened over the course of treatment. Clear braces use the same method but the materials are tooth-colored to avoid a metallic look.  Accelerated orthodontics are applied to correct cosmetic issues in about six months. Severe misalignments and bite issues can’t be corrected in such a short time, but if your concerns are purely cosmetic, it’s a great option for a short treatment time that can completely transform your smile. Invisalign treatment is popular because of its almost invisible appearance.  A treatment plan consists of a series of clear aligners that straighten teeth over time.  Come see us and find out what will be best to correct your smile!

Night Guards for Bruxism

Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics offers custom night guards to help patients overcome the negative effects of bruxism. Bruxism is defined as any regular teeth grinding or clenching of the jaw. Stress can intensify bruxism, but it is most often caused by an abnormal bite or crooked teeth. Some teeth grinders consciously grind their teeth and clench their jaw, but some only do so while asleep and may not even realize it.  Waking up with a dull headache or experiencing pain and stiffness in your jaw are signs you may be grinding your teeth overnight.

Patients who continually grind their teeth often end up needing crowns, bridges, root canals and implants. In severe cases, tooth loss can occur and partial or complete dentures may be needed.  Wearing a custom night guard protects the surface of the teeth, and also properly aligns the jaw to improve breathing and sleep. To fit you with a custom night guard a dentist takes an impression of your teeth, and the night guard is manufactured in a dental lab. This is an easy step to take to protect your teeth with an added bonus of improving sleep!

Smoking With Sleep Apnea

Smoking will exacerbate any respiratory condition, and it is proven to cause snoring and lead to obstructive sleep apnea.  Patients struggling with sleep apnea should see Dr. Cynthia Wong and her staff for evaluation. We can help patients find relief from sleep apnea with a snore guard, but quitting smoking is up to you!

Smoking causes upper airway inflammation, meaning the swelling causes the airway to narrow and disrupts the flow of air to the nasal passage and throat.  This causes snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.  Cigarettes are highly addictive, and some smokers seek treatment for sleep apnea like a snore guard or CPAP machine, but continue to smoke. Smoking with sleep apnea not only puts more stress on the heart every day, but negates any treatment a sleep apnea patient is undergoing.

Habitual smokers may feel relaxed by one last cigarette for the day, but it actually creates more complications for restful sleep. Smokers can experience nicotine withdrawal overnight, causing more waking up and restlessness.  Quitting smoking cold turkey is very difficult, but even lessening the amount of cigarettes or avoiding smoking at nighttime can help you achieve more restful sleep.  Most smokers cannot quit on their own or on their first attempt, so don’t get discouraged!

Solutions for Tooth Crowding

Occlusion is a term that refers to the alignment of teeth. Ideally, the teeth should fit easily in the mouth without crowding or spacing issues, but no one is born with a straight smile. The teeth won’t be able to perform their vital functions if they are misaligned. Which is why Dr. Cynthia Wong of Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics offers several orthodontic methods to fix improper alignment and a crowded smile.

Tooth crowding occurs from genetic and environmental factors. Treatment options for children and adults will differ depending on the size of the jaw. Sometimes the mouth is simply too small to handle the teeth that have erupted. In addition to correcting the problem with orthodontic treatment, Dr. Wong may suggest a palatal expander, a space maintainer, or with tooth extractions.

Weak Teeth

Tooth enamel is the outermost layer of the teeth and its purpose is to protect them from tooth decay and physical damage. Though tooth enamel is the hardest mineral substance in the body, it’s not invincible and has the ability to weaken over time. Weak teeth can also develop from the food and drinks we consume. Dr. Cynthia Wong of Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics is here to help you improve your oral health to avoid weak enamel.

If you notice your teeth and gums becoming increasingly sensitive, this is a symptom of enamel erosion. Acidity is enamel’s worst enemy, so the best prevention is eliminating sugary beverages and sodas from your diet. Additionally, if you brush your teeth too hard, you may wear down your enamel over time. Because tooth enamel can only be replicated with dental bonding if lost, we encourage patients to practice prevention to save time in the dental office and protect your smile.

Braces Removal

We’ve helped hundreds of patients realign their teeth at Dr. Cynthia Wong’s Orland Park orthodontic practice. Although proper alignment requires lifelong maintenance, the removal of permanent braces is a significant step. Because we believe procedures go better when the patient is informed, we want them to know how braces removal works.

Specialized reverse-action pliers are indispensable to braces treatment, and that’s just as true when they’re coming off. Brackets are held on by dental cement that pulls away if the brackets change shape. We use narrow-tipped pliers to compress the brackets, allowing us to lift them off. This process shouldn’t be painful to the patient, although they may feel some pressure. We also use pliers with broader tips to leverage off the bands surrounding molars. The cement will be allowed to remain on until all the brackets have been removed to ensure the teeth are protected. It will then be scraped away.

The teeth will likely be sensitive immediately after the removal of the cement, but this should clear up quickly as long as they were well cared for. It is advisable for patients to give the enamel a little time to remineralize instead of immediately returning to acidic or sticky foods. We’ll also make a new impression of the patient’s mouth to use as the basis for a retainer. Remember, there may come a time when a patient will no longer have to wear a retainer during the day, but night use of the retainer for life is the only way to ensure the teeth will not shift again.

Damon Braces

As an adult, choosing the type of orthodontic treatment that's right for you is a life-changing decision and this is why it’s essential to know what type of teeth-straightening options are out there. At Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics, Damon Braces are a type of orthodontic appliance that uses advanced shape memory wire and tie-less brackets to move your teeth into position without tightening.

With Damon Braces, you don’t need elastic or metal “ties” that create friction and pressure that slow treatment time and cause discomfort. Damon “tie-less” braces and advanced shape memory wires gently move teeth quickly and comfortably while giving you a broad, full smile with better facial balance and aesthetics. Patients will also be lucky enough to avoid “tightening appointments,” because Damon system braces have a unique slide mechanism that allows our doctor to use lighter forces to move teeth to their correct positions.

If you are searching to straighten your smile, give us a call to discuss your orthodontic options. To learn more about the services we provide, visit www.drcynthiawong.com for more information. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Cynthia Wong in Orland Park, IL, call 708-444-8341.

National Dental Health Month

National Dental Health Month is a great reason to celebrate fall! If you’re undergoing orthodontic work, you doubtlessly know the importance of regular oral hygiene. You also have an advantage in that you frequently make trips to Dr. Cynthia Wong’s Orland Park office. But because Halloween and the holiday season are coming up, we thought it might still be a good idea to remind patients of how to brush and floss properly.

Anybody with teeth needs to brush them twice a day. One of the advantages of Invisalign is that patients can remove their appliances and brush normally or with an electric toothbrush. For people with traditional braces, it gets a bit trickier. Only soft-bristled toothbrushes should be used on teeth. Usually, people should replace toothbrushes every three months, but ones used on braces may wear out sooner. Brush bracketed teeth in a circular motion, making sure you get near the gum line, since that’s where tartar builds up.

There are many kinds of flossers approved by the American Dental Association, but nobody should use improvised devices to pick their teeth. This could hurt the gums and spread disease. People with braces can use threaders to draw floss behind orthodontic wires or use specially-made floss with stiffened ends. When flossing, rub the strand along the side of each tooth down to the gum line and use a sweeping motion to gather up plaque.

You can also protect yourself from bad breath by brushing your tongue and using a scraper on it once per day. Mouthwash can help, too, but it isn’t a substitute for brushing and flossing.

Alleviate TMJ/TMD Pain with These Foods

Temporomandibular joint and muscle disorders (TMJ) affect the jaw muscles and the joints that connect your lower jaw to the skull. These muscles are the ones you use to speak, chew, and yawn and when TMJ occurs, it can cause discomfort and pain when you try to open and close your mouth. Here at Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics, not only can we treat TMJ, we can recommend a list of foods you should consume to alleviate your symptoms.

Your food choices vary depending on the amount of pain you’re experiencing and your ability to open your mouth, chew and swallow. For those who are able to adequately open their mouths and have minimal pain, a soft or easy chew diet will work well. If your jaw’s range of motion is limited, a soft diet that requires minimal chewing may be best. To lessen pain and other symptoms during an occurrence of TMJ, avoid eating hard foods, crunchy foods, or large foods that involve opening your mouth wide to chew.

If you experience facial pain or feel your jaw clicking when you chew certain foods, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.drcynthiawong.com for more information. Retainer Care

Many orthodontic patients require a retainer at the end of orthodontic treatment.  Removable retainers are an easy step to take to preserve a straight smile. Dr. Cynthia Wong of Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics provides retainers for patients, and caring for your retainer properly is important so that it functions and lasts as long as possible.  A silly but common mistake people make with their retainers is trying to cut corners -- don’t try to clean or brush your retainer while it’s still in your mouth!  You can’t quickly scrub your retainer while brushing your teeth -- the retainer cannot be completely cleaned of debris this way, and toothpaste can also be abrasive to the plastic of the retainer.  Always remove your retainer before cleaning thoroughly with water and your toothbrush, and use a mild dish or hand soap to help clean off debris, never abrasive toothpaste.

You should clean your retainer daily, and also treat it weekly by soaking.  Soaking helps maintain the cleanliness of the retainer and keep it from drying out.  To soak the retainer, dissolve denture cleaning tablets in water or add a little baking soda to water to make a solution.  Storing your retainer properly is also important for its longevity.  Get in the habit of always using and carrying a case.  Many retainers have disappeared after being folded up in napkins!

Avoid Damage to Brackets and Wires

If you’ve completed orthodontic treatment without damaging your brackets or wires, then you may just be one of the lucky ones. Braces breakage is fairly common and often happens when people use their teeth as tools. Dr. Cynthia Wong of Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics encourages patients to avoid doing so because this will prevent unnecessary visits to the office.

Breakage of orthodontic appliances during treatment can be unfortunate, unnecessary, and aggravating. Though the braces are attached with glue, they are not indestructible. The best way to avoid breakage during treatment is to avoid hard and sticky foods such as candy, chips, popcorn, and jerky. Also avoid chewing on hard objects such as pens, pencils and ice cubes. It doesn’t hurt to incorporate soft, healthy, foods into your diet. If your braces break due to a sports injury, contact our office immediately to have the issue repaired.

Oral Care with a Floss Threader

A floss threader is a flexible, yet rigid plastic device used for passing dental floss under fixed bridgework, fixed retainers, or behind orthodontic brackets and wires. Floss threaders make flossing easier with these dental appliances and resemble large plastic “needles” that are effective in getting the job done. Dr. Cynthia Wong of Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics may give you some in your dental goody bag if you are visiting her for a routine tightening, or to have orthodontics placed.

To ensure the optimal health of your gums, Dr. Cynthia Wong recommends flossing at least once a day, but if you have traditional braces, it might be best to aim for twice a day. A threader is a simple, disposable tool that you can find in the dental care section of your local drug store. To use a floss threader, simply thread the floss into the eye of the threader. Once the floss has been inserted, the ends can easily be manipulated to floss underneath your oral appliance.

Dry Mouth and Orthodontics

Dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, is both uncomfortable and unhealthy. People undergoing Invisalign or traditional orthodontic treatment may be especially sensitive to anything that makes their mouths less lubricated, so we at Dr. Cynthia Wong’s Orland Park orthodontic office want our patients to understand when they’re at risk and how to avoid it.

Saliva is produced by glands in the mouth and helps to keep it disease-free. Besides washing away food debris, saliva also helps the immune system by maintaining the mouth’s pH level. If the saliva glands are swollen, as can result from an autoimmune disease such as Sjögren’s syndrome or rheumatoid arthritis, the patient will be at a higher risk for xerostomia and gingivitis.

Dry mouth can also be the result of something the patient consumes. Medications for ADHD and mood disorders are likely culprits, as are alcohol, sugar, and caffeine. Orthodontic patients may need to ask about switching medications that are imperiling their oral treatment. They may also try over the counter throat moisturizers or oral rinses that can be obtained with a prescription.

Warning Signs of Gum Disease

It’s especially important for people with traditional braces to maintain their oral hygiene. We want to ensure the patients at Dr. Cynthia Wong’s Orland Park orthodontic office do not develop gum disease, as it may imperil the stability of their teeth. Therefore, this week’s blog post is devoted to identifying when the gum pockets need a cleaning.

Gingivitis means “gum inflammation.” It is the lesser form of gum disease, with “periodontitis” describing the more advanced stage. Gum disease develops when bacteria grow in the gum pockets and excrete acid. The acid clings to the teeth’s layer of plaque and damages the surrounding gum pocket. The immune system’s response is to cause the gum tissue to swell up, making it sensitive. Swollen gum tissue will look unusually red and bleed easily. It will be tender to touch and may cause bad breath.

Patients should always treat bleeding gums as a sign of a major problem. Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to gingivitis as a result of hormonal changes. If gum disease is allowed to continue, it may cause the gums to recede, making the teeth look unusually long and potentially making it easier for them to migrate once orthodontic treatment is complete.

Canker Sores

Canker sores also called aphthous ulcers are small sores that form in the mouth, typically on the inside of the cheeks, on or under the tongue, and on the gums. There are two types of canker sores: simple and complex. Simple canker sores usually disappear within a week, while complex canker sores are less common and may be caused by an underlying condition. If canker sores become a cause for concern, Dr. Cynthia Wong can discuss treatment options with you.

Though the exact cause of canker sores is unknown, stress and poor diet are usually to blame. Canker sores can also develop if you’ve bitten your cheek, jabbed your gum with your toothbrush, or if you brush too vigorously. Wires from braces may also cause canker sores. You may have a canker sore if you notice a painful, round, white or gray abscess with a red border in your oral cavity. To minimize the pain, you should avoid hot and spicy foods as well as acidic beverages.

If you have questions or concerns regarding canker sore relief, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide, visit www.drcynthiawong.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics in Orland Park, IL, call 708-444-8341.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

For some people, impacted wisdom teeth just happen. When it comes to a tooth, “impacted” is used to describe one that has not erupted, due to not having enough room to grow. Or, perhaps it’s partially-impacted, which means that it’s trying to erupt, but the surrounding teeth won’t let it. Impacted wisdom teeth are the third and final molars in the back of the mouth. If yours don’t emerge between the ages of 17-22, you may need to discuss extraction with Dr. Cynthia Wong.

Impacted wisdom teeth try to erupt, and while doing so, tend to push on surrounding teeth, causing them to be crooked and misaligned. Partially impacted wisdom teeth are harder to clean and because it’s easier for food to become stuck in these crevices, tooth decay or cavities may develop. Extraction is best to avoid infection, reduce or eliminate headaches, and prevent periodontal disease.

If you have questions or concerns regarding orthodontic treatment or tooth extraction, please give us a call. TMJD and headaches

Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJD) are a frequent source of pain. Not only do they cause damage to people’s teeth, they can also cause headaches. At the orthodontic office of Dr. Cynthia Wong in Orland Park, we can assist patients by providing night guards and reducing teeth grinding.

Teeth grinding, or bruxism, puts enormous strain on the teeth and the jaw muscles. In people with obstructive sleep apnea, it results from the body’s attempt to keep airways open while lying down. It can also be caused by psychological stress or by discomfort from malocclusions or impacted teeth. Pain from clenching the teeth may not be limited to the jaw. It can spread to connected muscles in the shoulder, neck, and top of the head. Tension headaches are often confused with TMJD headaches due to their similar symptoms.

Night guards prevent teeth from rubbing against each other, reducing the teeth’s chance of cracking and relieving pressure from the jaws. This often allows people to get better sleep, reducing their fatigue. In people with severe bruxism, night guards may also be necessary to prevent damage to braces.

Mouthguards with Braces

Protecting teeth during sports is always important, but the risk of injury is even greater for a patient with braces. At Dr. Cynthia Wong’s orthodontic practice in Orland Park, we want our patients to understand how to work with their care team to protect themselves.

A mouth injury to a person with braces could cause the brackets to become dislodged and the wires to gouge the patient’s lips, cheek, or tongue. Many sports require players with braces to wear mouthguards, and wrestlers are required to wear ones on their upper and lower teeth. Typically, dentists advise patients to get mouthguards that are custom-fitted. These are the most durable and offer the most protection.

However, braces present an additional complication in that the teeth are shifting position. A custom-fitted mouthguard will not still fit the teeth months later.  Therefore, it is necessary for the mouthguard to be updated continuously throughout the patient’s treatment. While this can get expensive, new products are always being developed that provide patients with more affordable options. There may still be phases of orthodontic work when fitting a mouthguard is impossible, but orthodontists generally are willing to cooperate. Patients with braces should not attempt to fit their own mouthguards, or the guard may get caught on their brackets.

Flossing with a Fixed Retainer

If you’ve recently completed orthodontic treatment and decided on a fixed retainer to protect your investment, you may be curious about how to floss. There are two types of fixed retainers – one that is bonded to each tooth and one that is bonded at the end of the retainer only. Fixed retainers can be difficult to keep clean, but fortunately, Dr. Cynthia Wong of Cynthia Wong Orthodontics is here to give you a lesson.

Depending on how tight the spaces are between the teeth, an interdental brush may be helpful in removing food particles from the teeth. These small brushes will reach into the small areas and pose no threat to tooth enamel. Additionally, floss threaders are extremely helpful in cleaning between the teeth. A floss threader looks like a loop and allows you to thread your floss through the hole and reach in between your retainer. Flossing is incredibly important to keep your smile healthy, don’t hesitate to ask for help if you need it.

If you have questions or concerns regarding orthodontic treatment or retainer options, please give us a call. Orthodontic Instruments

Orthodontic offices are full of specialized equipment. To ensure that our patients are comfortable with their treatment, we at the Orland Park office of Dr. Cynthia Wong wanted to provide an overview of some of the most commonly used instruments at our practice.

Dentists of all kinds use handheld mirrors and instruments with pointy tips called explorers. The explorer, or probe, is used to pick away tartar build-up and is especially important for cleaning the teeth of people with braces, but orthodontists also use it while applying elastics. Many of the pliers used in orthodontics are reverse-action to prevent objects from falling into the patient’s mouth. Howe pliers are used to place orthodontic wires, while distal end cutters are used to cut and taper the end of the wires so they will not injure the patient.

Several tools are used just for the application of molar bands. There is a pointed type of plier used specifically for stretching the elastic bands that are used to make space between the teeth before metal bands are placed. Pushers and burnishers are instruments that look like flattened explorers and are used to get the bands in place around the teeth and to shape them after application. Specialized pliers are also used to remove them.

Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis and Orthodontics

Orland Park’s Dr. Cynthia Wong is an experienced provider of orthodontic care to people with all sorts of health conditions. One of the issues in children which has the biggest impact on the structure of their jaws and teeth is juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JNA). Care for these patients requires collaboration between orthodontists and oral surgeons.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder which causes the body to attack its own joint lining. When the joints swell, the bones can become deformed under pressure, particularly in children. Among the affected joints is the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which connects the lower jaw to the head. Problems in the TMJ can lead to pain, teeth grinding, difficulty opening the mouth, and clicking sounds when the mouth moves. In children with JNA, it can also cause the lower jaw to become deformed, resulting in overcrowding of the front teeth and an open bite.

Orthodontic treatment for people with JNA varies on a case-by-case basis and is done in response to which part of the head an oral surgeon operates on. In some cases, headgear or functional appliances may be used to relieve pressure from certain areas. People with rheumatoid arthritis are especially vulnerable to gum disease and need to be careful to keep braces very clean. If they are having difficulty using non-motorized brushes, we can help them to find alternatives.

Common Retainer Options

Retainers are used during the final phase of orthodontic treatment. When kids and adults wear retainers correctly, the hard work and time that went into creating a straighter smile will be rewarded. Retainers help keep teeth straight and straighter teeth are easier to clean and reduce the chance of developing cavities. There are two types of retainers Dr. Cynthia Wong will address with patients depending on his or her needs.

  • Removable Retainer – a removable retainer is the most common type, but depending on the individual, it may not always be the best choice. A removable retainer is crafted from a clear plastic that is formed by heat and a model of your teeth.  Removable retainers can be virtually invisible, and easy to wear.

  • Fixed Retainer – also known as a bonded retainer, a fixed retainer consists of a wire being bonded to the back of the six bottom teeth. Bonded retainers tend to protect fewer teeth than removable retainers, but are ideal for the patient that may forget to wear his or her retainer at night.

Options for Guiding Canines

When it comes to malocclusions, a rare but serious problem is impaction of the canines. Put simply, this means that the upper canine teeth are unable to descend into their proper position. At Dr. Cynthia Wong’s orthodontic practice in Orland Park, we’re prepared to help solve this problem.

Children are assessed for their risk of impacted canines at a very young age. If the risk is caught before all the baby teeth fall out, we have more options. Palate expanders can be used to provide the mouth with more room for canines to descend. In some cases, it is appropriate for baby canines to be removed early so that permanent canines that have already erupted without descending can move into place. If the patient is still a teenager, it is possible to guide the canines into place using specialized orthodontic wires. A ballista spring is a looped piece of wire that resembles the round end of a safety pin. It is able to guide the canine teeth downward without putting pressure on the front teeth that could pull them back up.

Sometimes, the canines are not exposed enough to have brackets placed on them. In these cases, the patient will need to undergo a minor bit of gum surgery in which a flap of tissue is cut away from the unerupted canine, providing room for the orthodontic bracket. Once the canines have descended, they can be guided into their place in the arch with more typical orthodontic treatment.

Causes of Gap Teeth

A common problem we provide correction for at Dr. Cynthia Wong’s orthodontic office in Orland Park is a gap between the top front teeth. Gaps are scientifically known as diastemas, and we want our patients to understand what causes them so they’ll better understand their treatment options.

One common cause is tongue thrusting. This can be a habit or something people do because they are unable to swallow properly. Either way, the pressure on the front teeth pushes them outward and apart, which can also cause an overbite. There are orthodontic devices which can discourage tongue thrusting which are usually used in conjunction with psychological therapy.

Gap teeth can also be caused by a large labial frenum. This means that the tissue that connects the inside of the upper lip to the gum is too large and is keeping the teeth apart. Fixing this requires reductive surgery to the labial frenum before orthodontic work can begin.

Most often, gap teeth are simply the result of the teeth being too small for the jaw. The older a person is, the more likely it is they will require braces or invisible aligners to fix this.

Retainer Emergencies

If you haven’t worn your retainer for a while and when you go to place it, it doesn’t fit, this might be a problem for Dr. Cynthia Wong. Wearing a retainer as instructed is critical for keeping teeth in place after all that hard work from orthodontic treatment. The keys to avoiding problems with your retainer are simple, keep it in a safe place at all times, keep your retainer check appointments, and call us if a problem develops.

If you lose or break a removable or fixed retainer, call us immediately so that we can replace the appliance and get you back to maintaining a straight smile. Never place your retainer in a purse, or a pocket, unless it is in its appropriate container. If you have a fixed retainer, it’s possible for the wire to break after eating crunchy foods, or after nail-biting and other bad oral habits. Regardless of how your retainer breaks, Dr. Wong is here to fix it.

Intruded Teeth

In our last post, we mentioned that there are certain injuries which may require attention from both orthodontists and endodontists. Tooth intrusion is one such injury. It describes what happens when a tooth is pushed back into its socket, usually as a result of a violent blow. For such cases, Dr. Cynthia Wong in Orland Park is ready to help.

Intruded teeth will have to undergo a lot of imaging tests to determine the extent of the damage. Since they often re-erupt, it may not be necessary for them to undergo extensive treatment, particularly if they are baby teeth and the permanent teeth meant to take their place are undamaged. But in permanent teeth, a root canal is often necessary to remove damaged pulp, and orthodontics may be necessary to move the tooth back into their proper place as an alternative to orthognathic surgery. In children, a palatal spacer may also be necessary to ensure there is enough room for the tooth to erupt a second time if it was twisted or knocked out of alignment. The orthodontic treatment for guiding an intruded tooth back into place will require the use of elastic bands and specially shaped wires.

Orthodontics and Root Canals

Patients at Dr. Cynthia Wong’s orthodontic office in Orland Park receive specialized treatment for a number of dental problems. Some of those problems may also require the assistance of dentists with other specialties, such as endodontists, who perform root canals.

When dental pulp becomes infected, a tooth may either undergo a root canal or be extracted and replaced. From an orthodontic perspective, it is better for the tooth to undergo a root canal. In fact, there are some types of injuries for which both endodontic and orthodontic treatment are necessary. When a tooth gets a root canal, the pulp on the inside is removed and the pulp chamber is filled in, but the outside of the tooth and surrounding ligament tissue is unaffected. Because of this, the tooth can be moved with normal orthodontic treatments. This situation differs from a tooth that is replaced with an implant, which should never be mobile. In order to perform a root canal, it may be necessary to remove the orthodontic wire and the bracket from the tooth, but these can be replaced afterward. Even if the crown of the tooth had to be replaced, this does not necessarily mean it cannot be migrated with orthodontics, since the sealant used to fix orthodontic brackets to natural teeth also works on prosthetic crowns.

When to Replace Your Toothbrush

You may know when to replace your shoes, but do you know how often you should be replacing your toothbrush? With cold and flu season in full-force, Dr. Cynthia Wong of Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics encourages patients to ditch the toothbrush after coming in contact with a virus to avoid spreading germs. This isn’t the only time during the year to replace your toothbrush, allow us to explain why.

Toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months or the moment those bristles become frayed. Frayed bristles can cause abrasion to the gums and may make teeth more sensitive than they already are. A toothbrush should always be kept in a dry place facing upright so that the brush is able to air dry. Always keep your toothbrush away from others to avoid cross-contamination.

Orthodontic Wax

Whether you’re a new orthodontic patient, or a reaching the end of treatment, you’re likely to experience some wire pain with traditional braces. Once your braces are applied, Dr. Cynthia Wong of Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics will gift you with orthodontic wax. Orthodontic wax protects the gums and the linings of your cheeks, and lips, to provide a comfortable barrier when the sharp end of the wire begins to irritate these areas.

Orthodontic wax is designed to fit easily into your pocket, purse, or backpack, so you can use it wherever and whenever you may need it. Because this dental wax is non-toxic, it’s no big deal if you accidentally swallow a piece. You should apply the wax to the area of discomfort, and remove it before brushing and flossing your teeth. Be sure to reapply the wax regularly, especially after meals, to prevent irritation from getting worse.

Palate Expansion

Orthodontic treatments are used to correct for many problems in tooth alignment, but sometimes, the problem is the arch of the jaw. If the upper (maxillary) arch is too narrow, there may not be enough room for all the teeth, or the patient may have a cross-bite, one in which some of the upper teeth close inside the lower ones. In these situations, extracting teeth is not the only option; there is also treatment with palate expanders.

A palate expander is a functional orthodontic device which fits in the roof of the mouth. It works by putting pressure on against the teeth with two movable parts which are connected by a screw. At regular intervals, the patient or their caregiver turns the screw, causing the pieces of the expander to move outward. Fixed palate expanders are attached to the molars, although there is a removable variety that works more like a retainer. This type of treatment is usually recommended for children and adolescents because their skull bones are still flexible enough to undergo the type of change caused by palatal expansion; adults may not be able to undergo it except for minor adjustments. Orthodontic treatment for misaligned teeth may accompany or follow the use of a palate expander.

TMD-Fibromyalgia Connection

At Dr. Cynthia Wong’s Orland Park orthodontic office, we provide crucial assistance to people suffering from temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD or TMJD). Characterized by painful sensations in the joint which connects the jaw to the rest of the head, TMD can radiate outward and cause the patient to grind their teeth at night. Today, we’re looking at another disorder which has a high rate of comorbidity with TMJ: fibromyalgia.

One of the more poorly understood disorders, fibromyalgia causes fatigue and pain throughout the body. It is believed to be caused by a problem in how the brain reacts to input from the nervous system and can be triggered by trauma or illness. Besides TMD and the headaches, neck aches, and shoulder aches TMD causes, fibromyalgia also is associated with migraines, menstruation difficulty, and irritable bowel syndrome and can cause cognitive and memory problems for patients. As with TMD, women are likelier to get it than men, but fibromyalgia tends to show up in middle-aged people, while TMD more often occurs in young adults.

TMD poses a threat to patients’ oral health by causing teeth grinding and jaw clenching. If a patient’s TMD is related to fibromyalgia, it is even more important for them to reduce their pain, protect their teeth, and get better rest by getting fitted at our office for a customized night guard.

Dangers of Impacted Wisdom Teeth

When wisdom teeth are impacted, this means that they are lying under the gum and have yet to erupt. Wisdom teeth usually erupt between the ages of 17-22, so if yours haven’t developed by then, Dr. Cynthia Wong of Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics may suggest extraction. Extraction is recommended for impacted wisdom teeth because they put the patient at risk of infection and it usually does more help than harm to have them removed.

Impacted wisdom teeth increase a patient’s risk of infection and can also cause damage to surrounding teeth. Impacted wisdom teeth can additionally lead to periodontal disease and headaches. Schedule a consultation today to discuss if extraction is right for you.
