Consequences of Missing Teeth

Although tooth loss is typically associated with the elderly, missing teeth can occur in adults for a variety of reasons. Whether you’ve lost a tooth to decay, or injury, tooth loss can rob you of much more than the ability to chew and properly digest food. It can have serious social, psychological and emotional consequences as well. At Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics, we don’t want you to experience the consequences of a toothless grin. This is why we offer a wide variety of restorative and cosmetic options to give you the smile you’ve always dreamed of.

The most obvious effect of missing teeth is aesthetic. When a tooth is lost, the facial muscles begin to sag, making you appear older than you are. Additionally, missing teeth will make it more difficult to chew and may even affect the way you speak. The more teeth a person is missing, the more challenging the task to replace them can become. It can also be costly. It is important to have regular dental visits with us to prolong the life of your teeth.

If you have missing teeth, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn more about the services we provide at our office, visit www.drcynthiawong.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Cynthia Wong in Orland Park, IL, call 708-444-8341.

Wisdom Teeth Function

Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars that most people get in their late teens or early twenties. During this “age of wisdom” phase, sometimes teeth can be a valuable asset to the mouth when healthy and properly aligned, but more often they are misaligned and require removal. Some might think of wisdom teeth as spare tires, because if you lost your teeth, the wisdom teeth would be extra teeth that come in and function like normal teeth. Here at Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics, Dr. Wong may recommend an extraction depending on their position and stage of development.

So why do we have them? Anthropologists believe wisdom teeth or the third set of molars, were the evolutionary answer to our ancestor’s early diet of coarse, rough food – like leaves, roots, nuts, and meats – which required more chewing power and resulted in excessive wear of the teeth. The modern diet with its softer foods, along with marvels of modern technologies such as forks, spoons, and knives, has made the need for wisdom teeth nonexistent; however, they don’t always need to be removed.

If your wisdom teeth are causing you pain, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn more about the services we provide at our office, visit www.drcynthiawong.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Cynthia Wong in Orland Park, IL, call 708-444-8341.

Benefits of Dentures

At Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics, we recommend dentures to patients who have missing teeth but do not want to undergo an invasive procedure such as dental implants. Dentures are replacements for missing teeth that can be taken out and put back into your mouth. While these mouthpieces might take some getting used to, and will never feel exactly the same as your natural teeth, today’s dentures are natural looking and more comfortable than ever before.

If you’ve lost all of your natural teeth, whether from gum disease, tooth decay, or injury, replacing missing teeth will benefit your appearance and your health. That’s because dentures make it easier to eat and speak better than you ever could without teeth. There are different types of dentures, but they each type offers the same overall benefits. For example, when you lose all of your teeth, facial muscles can sag, making you appear older than you actually are. Dentures can also improve your appearance and smile, because, without support from the denture, facial muscles can sag, making a person look older. If you already have dentures, be sure that you are taking proper care of them.

If you are missing teeth and would like to discuss your treatment options, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our office, visit www.drcynthiawong.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Cynthia Wong in Orland Park, IL, call 708-444-8341.

Advantages of Traditional Braces

If you have crooked and/or a misaligned bite (an underbite or overbite), there are a variety of treatments that can help straighten teeth, including braces and aligners. At Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics, our treatment options for straightening teeth include traditional braces, clear braces, as well as Invisalign, but in this specific post, we are going to explain the advantages of traditional braces.

The most inexpensive type of braces for adults and children are the traditional, stainless steel versions. Dental braces feature brackets that tend to run along a wire. The wire and brackets that form part of the braces are pressed against the patient’s teeth. This supports slight movements that can help in properly aligning and straightening the teeth. In addition, traditional braces also correct even the most complicated issues in aligning the teeth. They might not be aesthetically pleasing, but traditional braces are not removable, allowing for a reduction in treatment time. If braces are indeed the solution for you, Dr. Cynthia Wong will prescribe an appliance specific for your needs.

If you are searching for a straighter smile, give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn more about the services we provide at our office, visit www.drcynthiawong.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Cynthia Wong in Orland Park, IL, call 708-444-8341.

Dangers of Snoring and Solutions

At Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics our goal is to enhance the quality of life of our patients who come to use for their dental health needs and this includes snoring. Snoring is a common condition that can affect anyone. Occasional snoring may not be serious; however, if you are a habitual snorer, you risk impairing your sleep quality and developing poor daytime function.

Frequent snorers can be at risk for serious health problems, including obstructive sleep apnea. Sleep apnea creates a variety of problems, including long interruptions of breathing, poor night’s sleep, chronic headaches and daytime sleepiness, and fatigue. At Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics we provide a night guard as a treatment option. It has a unique inner lining that is softened by heat during the fitting process. This allows for a custom fit and is designed to keep your lower jaw comfortable and positioned slightly forward while sleeping.

Many of our patients prefer a night guard as practical and less invasive alternative to CPAP therapy. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.drcynthiawong.com for more information. The Temporomandibular Joint: Explained

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the jaw joint. You have two of them which work together as a pair, one in front of each ear. Without this joint, you would not be able to chew your food, yawn, or even speak. The joints connect the lower jaw bone (mandible) to the temporal bones of the skull on each side of the head. When this joint begins to cause facial pain, headaches, and/or jaw muscle stiffness, Dr. Cynthia Wong can develop a treatment plan.

When you open your mouth, the rounded upper ends of the mandible on each side of the jaw glide along the joint socket at the base of the skull. They slide back to their original position when you close your mouth. This joint is unique in the sense that the articular surfaces of the bones never actually come in contact with one another – they are separated by an articular disk. This disk splits the joint into two synovial joint cavities, each lined by a synovial membrane. It is important to keep in mind that occasional clicking or discomfort in the jaw joint or chewing muscles is common, but if you have a serious concern for TMD, you should schedule a consultation with Dr. Cynthia Wong.

If you have questions about the temporomandibular joint or TMJ/TMD, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.drcynthiawong.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics in Orland Park, IL, call 708-444-8341.

Prevent Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is the destruction of your tooth enamel, the hard, outer layer of your teeth. Hundreds of different types of bacteria live on our teeth, gums, tongue and other crevices in the mouth. Some are helpful, but some can be harmful such as those that play a role in the tooth decay process. At Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics, we want our patients to know that good oral and dental hygiene can help you avoid cavities and tooth decay.

When a tooth is exposed to acid frequently – for example, if you frequently eat foods or drinks containing sugar and starches – the repeated cycles of acid attacks cause the enamel to continue to lose minerals. This will cause a white spot to appear if the minerals have been lost. When this happens, this is a sign of early decay.

You can help prevent tooth decay by following these tips:

  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.

  • Clean between your teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner.

  • Eat nutritious and balanced meals and limit snacking.

  • Visit your dentist for professional cleanings and oral examination.

If you need assistance maintaining your oral hygiene routine, give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our office, visit www.drcynthiawong.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Cynthia Wong in Orland Park, IL, call 708-444-8341.

Benefits of Traditional Braces

Dental braces are used to straighten crooked teeth, align upper and lower jaws, improve the aesthetics of smiles and faces, and relieve pressure on temporomandibular joints. The most inexpensive type of braces for adults and children are the traditional, stainless steel versions. Here at Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics, if you are searching for a straighter smile, then we can provide you with that winning smile you’ve always dreamed of.

Obviously, the only drawback to wearing traditional braces is how visible they are. However, metal brackets are the sturdiest option, which means less chance of damage to the appliance and less time spent in the dentist’s chair. While it might not always seem beneficial to you, traditional braces are there to stay for the duration of treatment.  Because traditional braces exert a fair amount of force on the teeth, adjustment takes far less time than it would with alternatives.

If you are searching to straighten your teeth we have a variety of options to make that happen. To learn more about the services we provide at our office, visit www.drcynthiawong.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Cynthia Wong in Orland Park, IL, call 708-444-8341.

Break Those Tender Teeth Habits

If you avoid eating cold foods or drinking hot beverages because your teeth are a little tender, it may be time to get to the root of this problem. If you have sensitive teeth, with Dr. Cynthia Wong may recommend dental sealants or fluoride treatments to decrease sensitivity. Sometimes the solution is simply breaking bad habits. If you catch yourself performing any of the following habits, do your best to break them.

  • You’re brushing too hard – over time, if you brush with too much force, you can wear down the protective layers of your teeth and expose the microscopic hollow tubes or canals that lead to your dental nerves. When these tubules are exposed, tooth sensitivity is a result.

  • You’re eating too many acidic foods – If the pathways to your nerves are exposed, acidic foods will leave you in pain.

  • You have tooth decay – If you have tooth decay, it’s easy for bacteria to accumulate in these tiny crevices, which causes acid build-up and enamel breakdown.

  • You’re a tooth grinder – Grinding your teeth can wear down your enamel. This exposes the dentin and causes sensitive teeth.

If you experience tooth sensitivity, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn more about the services we provide at our office, visit www.drcynthiawong.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Cynthia Wong in Orland Park, IL, call 708-444-8341.

Dental Crown Characteristics

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a tooth to protect it as well as restore its shape and size, strength and improves its appearance. If Dr. Cynthia Wong suggests a crown, it is probably to restore a tooth from a large filling, root canal, or cracked tooth syndrome. Permanent crowns can be made from many materials and Dr. Cynthia Wong will discuss them with you during your consultation.

A crown can help strengthen a tooth with a large filling when there isn’t enough tooth remaining to hold a filling. Crowns can also be used to attach dental bridges when those are needed. Additionally, a crown can protect a weak tooth from breaking or restore one that’s already broken. A crown is a good way to cover teeth that are discolored or badly shaped.

Dental Supplies for Braces

Brushing and flossing with braces will take some extra care to ensure you are doing a good job. Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics of Orland Park, IL wants patients to know how to take proper care during their orthodontic treatment. Check out some of the dental supplies that will help you do that!

Floss Threaders

Floss threaders are loops that help you get the floss under your wires quicker and easier. They look like a sewing needle with an eye at the end, but larger. Many patients enjoy using it because flossing with regular floss can be time-consuming and tedious.

Superfloss

Superfloss refers to a brand of floss that has a stiff end that makes it easy to get underneath wires. It also has a patch of thicker floss to better remove plaque.

Interdental Cleaners

These are tiny brushes that are able to get underneath wires. These make it so it is possible to brush the sides of brackets. Without an interdental cleaner, a regular toothbrush will miss much of the plaque that surrounds the brackets.

Be sure to take extra-special care of your teeth while you wear braces to keep away cavities and uneven staining. To schedule your next appointment at Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics in Orland Park, IL, call our office at (708) 444-8341 or visit our website, www.drcynthiawong.com

Invisalign vs Braces

When it comes to options for straightening your teeth, there is often a clear favorite (pun intended). Invisalign is a clear, nearly invisible tray aligning system that we offer patients here at Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics in Orland Park, IL. Many patients prefer Invisalign over traditional braces for great reasons.

Invisibility

One of the major advantages Invisalign has over traditional metal braces is the invisibility. Invisalign is made of clear aligners, so they are nearly invisible. Many people will not even notice you are wearing them. Braces consist of metal brackets and wires that cannot be hidden.

Convenience

Another major reason why patients choose Invisalign over braces is the convenience factor. Invisalign aligners are able to be taken out for eating and dental hygiene. This means you do not have to avoid certain types of food like you do with braces. It also means you do not have to spend extra time brushing and flossing with special supplies. You can brush and floss normally.

Comfort

The smooth plastic trays are also more comfortable than metal braces, so the calluses and irritated spots that braces cause are less likely.

If Invisalign sounds like the right choice for you, set up a consultation with us! To schedule your appointment at Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics in Orland Park, IL, call our office at (708) 444-8341 or visit our website, www.drcynthiawong.com

Tooth Colored Fillings

To treat a cavity Dr. Cynthia Wong will remove the decayed portion of the tooth and then “fill” the area on the tooth where the decayed material was removed. Fillings are also used to repair cracked or broken teeth that have been worn down from misuse (tooth grinding). Here at the office, we utilize white fillings, also known as tooth colored fillings because they exude the most natural looking appearance.

Composite resins (tooth colored fillings) provide solid durability and resistance to fracture in small to mid-size fillings that need to survive the moderate pressure from the constant pressure of chewing. Composite fillings require the tooth to be kept clean and dry while the cavity is being filled, which is why they may take longer to apply than any other type of filling. Although no filling lasts forever, tooth colored fillings have been known to last for over 10 years. It is a safe, affordable and attractive solution for many dental drawbacks.

Facts about Fluoride

Fluoride is a natural mineral found throughout the earth’s crust and widely distributed in nature and is often added to water to help reduce tooth decay. Research has shown that fluoride not only reduces cavities in children and adults, but it also helps repair the early stages of tooth decay, even before the decay is visible. Here at Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics we thought we would take this opportunity to deliver some facts on fluoride.

When fluoride reaches your teeth, it is absorbed into the enamel. Fluoride helps to repair the enamel by replenishing the lost calcium and phosphorus to keep your teeth hard through a process called remineralization. When fluoride is present during this process, the minerals deposited into the tooth enamel help strengthen your teeth and prevent dissolution during the next demineralization phase. The results are stronger tooth enamel and a cavity-free grin.

If you have questions about fluoride, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our office, visit www.drcynthiawong.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Cynthia Wong in Orland Park, IL, call 708-444-8341.

Electric vs Manual Toothbrush

Here at Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics, Dr. Cynthia Wong isn’t picky about what type of toothbrush you use because the important thing is that you are brushing your teeth correctly. However, our staff thought we would tell explain how brushing your teeth with an electric toothbrush compares to manual brushing.

It’s possible to brush your teeth effectively with a manual toothbrush. However, an electric toothbrush can be a great alternative to a manual one, especially if you have arthritis or other conditions that make it difficult to brush well. Although almost any toothbrush can do an effective job, research suggests there is one electronic toothbrush bristle configuration that seems to be better at removing plaque and preventing gum disease. If you choose an electric toothbrush, make sure the toothbrush is comfortable to hold and easy to use. It’s important to remember that the purpose of a toothbrush is to remove plaque and to stimulate the gums to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Whether you choose an electric toothbrush or a manual one, remember that what’s most important is daily brushing and flossing.

Dental Anxiety

It is one thing for anxiety to affect your daily relationships, but when it starts to impact your overall health then it becomes a problem. Dental anxiety, or dental phobia, is much more serious than just getting sweating palms and sleepless nights before an appointment – it’s a paralyzing fear of dentists or dental treatment. Fortunately, Dr. Cynthia Wong has the tools, techniques, and gentle touch to help make regular dental visits as comfortable as possible for you.

The key to coping with dental anxiety is to discuss your fears with your doctor. Once Dr. Cynthia Wong knows what your fears are, she will better be able to work with you to determine the best ways to make you less anxious and more relaxed. In addition, be sure to ask her what’s happening at every stage of the procedure. This way you can mentally prepare for what’s to come.

Sensitive Teeth: Causes and Treatment

If you avoid eating cold foods or drinking hot beverages because your teeth might cause you pain if you do, it may be time to get to the bottom of this painful condition. When the tooth’s hard enamel wears down or gums recede, tiny microscopic tubes located in the layer of the tooth below the enamel are exposed. Tooth sensitivity is caused by the stimulation of cells within these tubes, causing a short, sharp pain when the area is exposed to hot or cold temperatures. Thankfully there is treatment, and Dr. Cynthia Wong can provide you with relief.

Some of the causes of sensitive teeth include tooth decay, a cracked tooth, worn tooth enamel, worn fillings and tooth roots that are exposed as a result of aggressive tooth brushing, gum recession, and periodontal disease. Depending on the cause, Dr. Cynthia Wong may first suggest that you try desensitizing toothpaste, which contains compounds that help block sensation traveling from the tooth surface to the nerve. If the desensitizing toothpaste does not ease your discomfort, she may suggest in-office treatments.

If you have temperature sensitive teeth, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn more about the services we provide at our office, visitwww.drcynthiawong.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Cynthia Wong in Orland Park, IL, call 708-444-8341.

Selecting a Mouthwash that Meet Your Oral Health Needs

Mouthwash or rinses are used for a variety of reasons: to freshen breath, to help prevent or control tooth decay, to reduce plaque, to prevent or reduce gingivitis, to reduce the speed that tartar forms on the teeth, or to produce a combination of these effects.  Mouthwash has a few beneficial properties and our doctors at Dr. Cynthia Wong would like to explain some of them.

  • Antimicrobial agents act directly on oral bacteria to help reduce plaque, decrease the severity of gingivitis and control bad breath.

  • Fluoride helps reduce tiny lesions (tooth decay) on tooth enamel and make teeth more resistant to decay.

  • Astringent salts can serve as temporary deodorizers that mask bad breath.

  • Odor neutralizers act by chemically inactivating odor causing compounds.

If you desire a brighter smile, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn more about the services we provide at our office, visit www.drcynthiawong.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Cynthia Wong in Orland Park, IL, call 708-444-8341.

Notes on Novocain

When you think of visiting the dentist’s office, the term “Novocain” probably comes to mind. Novocain is a local anesthetic used to suppress pain in patients who remain conscious. Though Dr. Cynthia Wong is an orthodontist, she may administer this drug to numb sensitive gums during a dental procedure such as braces being applied or applying a tooth crown. During your consultation, Dr. Cynthia Wong will determine if Novocain is appropriate for your treatment plan as well as if it is the best option for you.

Novocain is commonly used and is normally injected into an area during surgery and other procedures to cause numbness of the surrounding tissues. Like any medication, however, side effects include numbness around the injection site that can last for several hours, a tingling sensation around the injection site, as well as minor swelling around or near the injection site. Novocain is a good option for some, but not for others. Be sure to provide us with as much information about your medical history as possible so that you and Dr. Cynthia Wong can make an informed decision.

If you have questions about our pain management options, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our office, visit www.drcynthiawong.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Cynthia Wong in Orland Park, IL, call 708-444-8341.

Dental Crown Details

Over time our teeth begin to weaken and become more susceptible to problems such as decay, cracks, and discoloration. Fortunately, Dr. Cynthia Wong offers restorative treatment options, such as dental crowns. A dental crown also known as a tooth crown, is a tooth-shaped “cap” that is placed over a tooth – to cover the tooth to restore its shape and size, strength, and improve its appearance. Crowns can be made from porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or gold. However, to maintain a natural look and feel a porcelain finished crown is highly recommended as it can be matched to the shade of your other teeth.

The procedure for installing a dental crown typically takes two separate visits. On the first visit, your tooth will be reshaped and by filing down the enamel so that the crown can be placed over it. Once the tooth has been reshaped, a mold will be taken of that tooth and the surrounding teeth. This mold will be sent to a dental lab so that the permanent crown can be made. Before you leave the office, you will be fitted for a temporary crown so that you have some protection on the tooth. In about two-three weeks you will come back for the final result.

If you think you may benefit from a dental crown, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our office, visit www.drcynthiawong.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Cynthia Wong in Orland Park, IL, call 708-444-8341.

Straight Teeth are Healthy Teeth

Swollen red gums can often be the result of having teeth that are crowded or too widely spaced. When teeth are properly aligned, it helps the gums fit more securely around the teeth, allowing for the strongest and healthiest defense against potential periodontal problems. At Cynthia Wong Orthodontics, Dr. Cynthia Wong supplies a variety of options to straighten your teeth so that you can have a beautiful healthy smile.

When teeth are properly aligned, they’re easier to clean and when your teeth are clean and dental plaque free, you’re less likely to need a tooth filling or gum disease treatment. When teeth are straight, it helps the gums fit more securely around the teeth, allowing for the strongest and healthiest defense against potential periodontal problems. Tooth decay and gum disease are caused by bacteria. Left untreated, they can cause mouth sores, tender or bleeding gums, bad breath, and possible tooth loss.  Correctly aligning your teeth can also alleviate the issues that can be caused by an improper bite, speech or chewing difficulties, jaw problems and increased wear on the tooth enamel.

If you would like to discuss your orthodontic treatment options, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our office, visitwww.drcynthiawong.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Cynthia Wong in Orland Park, IL, call 708-444-8341.

How Does Grinding Make Teeth Sensitive?

Sensitive can make brushing unpleasant. It can even make you want to skip your favorite drinks or foods. While there are a few different reasons that teeth can be sensitive, a common reason is grinding. At Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics in Orland Park, IL, we can provide our patients with night guards so that they can protect their teeth while they grind at night.

If you are experiencing sensitivity to your teeth, be sure to schedule an appointment with your dentist to make sure it isn’t a cavity or an infection. If you suspect you grind your teeth at night or have been told that you do, schedule an appointment with Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics. Night grinding and clenching is a common occurrence and it often creates sensitivity. This is because the constant pressure and grinding of your teeth begin to wear down enamel. When enamel is worn down, the dentin is exposed. Dentin is what makes up the center of our teeth and it contains tiny tubes that lead to the nerves of our teeth. When this dentin is exposed, the nerves are exposed and you feel pain. This is what makes it uncomfortable to brush your teeth and eat/drink hot and cold foods/drinks. Changing your behavior can help stop the grinding. In addition, we can make you a custom night guard to protect your teeth.

To learn more about the custom night guards we can create for you, be sure to schedule an appointment with us at our Orland Park, IL office or visit our website. To schedule with Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics, call us at (708) 444-8341 or visit www.drcynthiawong.com

Fighting Bad Breath

Along with keeping oral care for a nice smile, it is also important for keeping fresh breath. If you deal with frequent bad breath, keep reading for some tips! Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics of Orland Park, IL wants all of their patients to practice good oral hygiene.

Bad breath is caused from bacteria in your mouth. There are certain kinds of bacteria that cause odor and the foods we eat can contribute to them. Foul-smelling breath can also be worsened by a dry mouth, as bacteria thrive in dry mouth conditions.

In order to keep bacteria at bay and your breath fresh, make sure to keep a clean mouth and stay hydrated. Brushing two or three times per day and flossing once per day will keep plaque and debris away. When brushing, make sure to hit all the surfaces of your mouth, especially your tongue. The tongue has hair-like taste buds where bacteria love to hide. Keep hydrated by getting in your daily water recommendation every day. It’s a good idea to mark a water bottle with times of the day so you get even hydration.

Avoid drinks that dry out the mouth like alcohol and caffeine, especially if you have an event you want fresh breath for, like if you will be sharing an elevator, a car, or have a date. If you do need a boost of caffeine, try green tea. It still has caffeine, but it hydrates you and has properties that fight bad breath bacteria!

To have fresh breath and keep it, oral hygiene is very important! To schedule an appointment at Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics of Orland Park, IL, call our office at (708) 444-8341 or visit our website, www.drcynthiawong.com

Shopping for the Correct Toothpaste

When stepping foot into the dental health aisle at the drugstore, our staff at The Oyster Bay Family Dentist understands that the selections of toothpaste can be overwhelming. Should you go for tartar control, fluoride, sensitive, or whitening toothpaste? How do you decide? When it comes to choosing the toothpaste that is best for you, it’s important to consider your unique oral health needs. The best way to discover what those are is by scheduling an oral exam with Dr. Cynthia Wong in Orland Park, IL. In the meantime, here are some options to consider while browsing:

  • Anti-cavity: This type of toothpaste contains fluoride. Fluoride plays an active role in preventing decay, and it actively strengthens tooth enamel.

  •  Anti-gingivitis: If you spit blood in the sink, this is an early sign of gingivitis, a mild form of gum disease. Antigingivitis toothpaste helps reduce oral bacteria and can be very effective at stopping gingivitis in its tracks.

  • Desensitizing: If you’ve ever bit into an ice cream cone and felt a sharp pain in your tooth’s nerve, this type of toothpaste will provide relief by blocking the tooth’s pain signal to the nerve.

  • Tartar-control: This toothpaste does exact what it says, however, the best way to remove tartar is by scheduling a professional dental cleaning with one of our doctors.

  • Whitening: This toothpaste contains chemicals that are able to help maintain the natural color of your teeth.

Dental Benefits of Xylitol

Does the amount of sugar you consume on a daily basis have you worried about the status of your tooth’s enamel? If so, Dr. Cynthia Wong recommends that you switch to sugar-free products that contain xylitol. Xylitol is a natural sugar alcohol that helps prevent cavities. It is equal in sweetness and volume to sugar and can be consumed through chewing gum, candies, and dental products.

Xylitol is found most commonly in chewing gum and mints but is also found naturally in many fruits and vegetables, including corn, raspberries, and plums. Unlike sucrose (regular table sugar), the main culprit associated with tooth decay, xylitol is not broken down by the most prominent decay-causing bacteria to produce acid. In fact, xylitol also prevents bacteria from sticking to the teeth. Because the bacteria in the mouth that are causing cavities are unable to digest xylitol, their growth is greatly reduced. The result is a healthy smile that you can be proud of.

Avoiding Cavities While Wearing Braces

Wearing braces unfortunately means that there are more places for bacteria to hide. This is why it is important to keep good oral hygiene, especially while wearing braces. At Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics in Orland Park, IL, we want to advise our patients about proper oral care while wearing braces to avoid unwelcome cavities.

Cavities happen when bacteria sit on a tooth long enough for the enamel to start decaying. Sugar is a huge cavity-causer; therefore, your first tip is to avoid consuming sugary foods and drinks all day. It is okay to have a sugary snack or drink once in a while, but making it a staple of your diet is a bad idea for both your teeth and your health. If you do choose to have some candy or a pop with lunch, be sure to rinse your mouth afterward and brush your teeth when you can.

The most important rule of keeping cavity-free teeth is brushing and flossing. Make sure you are brushing two to three times per day, including after meals, and flossing once per day. It will help to have braces-friendly dental supplies on hand to make the job easier.

Straight teeth have many health benefits for the mouth; however, if poor oral care is taken, it can lead to some nasty cavities. Take our tips for good care! Avoiding Staining While Wearing Braces

When you get your braces off, you are going to have a wonderfully straightened smile. Many patients cannot stop smiling the day they get their braces off! However, with poor dental hygiene, sometimes the day the braces come off can reveal some uneven staining. At Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics in Orland Park, IL, we want all of our patients to know how to take good care to avoid staining with braces. Keep reading for our tips!

Keep it Clean

Be sure that you are brushing and flossing as often as you are supposed to. This means brushing in the morning, before bed, and after meals. You will also need to floss every day. While wearing braces, you will need some special supplies to take good care of your teeth.

Use Special Dental Supplies

There are tiny tree-shaped brushes called interdental cleaners that should be used to brush the sides of the brackets under the wires. These are important so that plaque does not build up around the brackets. A regular toothbrush can be used to brush along the tops and bottoms of the brackets. You will also want threaders that can be used to easier flossing.

Watch out for Stain-Causers

Dark foods and drinks are able to stain teeth if they are consumed frequently. Although they can stain teeth slowly over time, since you are most likely wearing braces for at least one year, you will want to make sure you are paying attention to these stain-causers. Examples are coffee, cola, blueberries, and beets. Drink dark liquids through a straw, limit the amount of dark foods and liquids consumed, and rinse your mouth after consumption.

Braces create a beautiful smile and healthy teeth. Make sure your beautiful smile stays beautiful after braces by keeping these tips in mind. Cavity Basics

Cavities are just about as common as a cold and although they mostly occur in children, adults need to be aware of them too. It isn’t unusual for bacteria to be found in your mouth, however, when bacteria mixes with acid, food pieces and saliva in the mouth it creates a sticky substance called plaque. The acids in plaque damage the enamel covering your teeth and create holes in the tooth called cavities. Although Dr. Cynthia Wong offers a variety of filling options for cavities, she would prefer you avoid them altogether.

Developing cavities is a process and they just don’t appear overnight. In the early stages, tooth decay can be stopped. The best way to prevent cavities is by reducing the amount of plaque and bacteria in the mouth and the best way to do this is by brushing and flossing daily. Cavities caught in the very early stages can be reversed, however, caries that have destroyed enamel cannot. It is important to schedule a professional cleaning with our doctors every six months to reduce your risk of tooth decay.

Athletes and Mouth Guards

Mouth guard use has been shown to reduce the risk of sport-related dental injuries. Imagine playing a sport that you love, when suddenly, a tooth gets knocked out. Smiling, talking and eating would be difficult and it would probably take you some time to recover. When it comes to protecting your mouth during sports, a mouth guard is an essential piece of athletic gear that should be part of your standard from an early age. Fortunately, Dr. Cynthia Wong can supply her athletic patients of all ages with custom-fitted mouth guards for proper protection.

Custom mouth guards are made from exact and precise models of an individual’s own teeth. They are also made of resilient and tear-resistant materials ensuring a proper fit. A properly fitted mouth guard absolutely must be protective, comfortable, resilient, tear resistant, odorless, tasteless, and allow room for you to breathe. Because Dr. Cynthia Wong’s custom-fitted mouth guards are made for your mouth and your mouth only, they are more reliable than over-the-counter mouth guards.

What is an Underbite?

The main cause of an underbite is a misalignment of the lower jaw, which is usually present at birth. An underbite, clinically called prognathism, is the malocclusion or “bad bite” that happens when the lower teeth overlap the upper teeth. Just because your mouth may have this problem doesn’t mean that it’s untreatable. If you have been diagnosed with an underbite, Dr. Cynthia Wong can correct the problem with dental braces.

Although far less common than overbites, underbites still affect 5-10 percent of the population. An extreme underbite can cause facial abnormality, resulting in an extended chin. In addition to the aesthetic problem, underbites including difficulty with chewing, swallowing and speaking. Underbites may also wear down tooth enamel and increase your chances of developing tooth decay or other dental problems such as TMJ disorder.

Overbite Complications

If you have been diagnosed with an overbite, this simply means that your top teeth extend beyond your bottom teeth. It is a common dental problem that Dr. Cynthia Wong can correct with dental braces. Overbite teeth are considered a type of “bad bite.” It can either be noticeable or unnoticeable, but it some extreme cases it can make your jaw look significantly larger or your bottom jaw look much smaller.

Most often, overbites are inherited as traits just as the color of your eyes or the freckles on your cheeks. Other causes of misaligned bites may result from an early loss of baby or adult teeth, gum disease, or common oral health problems in children, such as thumb sucking. Once Dr. Cynthia Wong confirms your overbite with X-rays, she may take regular photographs of your face to further examine the relationship between the teeth, jaws, and head. From there, an individualized treatment plan will be developed to give you the smile you’ve always dreamed of.

Bruxism Diagnosis

Grinding of your teeth, also known as bruxism can have a variety of causes. Some experts view bruxism as nothing more than a habit. It can also be a result of the body’s reaction when the teeth do not line up or come together properly. If you experience signs and symptoms of bruxism, Dr. Cynthia Wong can provide you with an individualized treatment plan.

When diagnosing bruxism, Dr. Cynthia Wong may ask about your general dental health, what sources of stress you have in your life, and what medicines you take. She will then examine you, paying special attention to the muscles in and around your jaw. Additionally, Dr. Wong will look at your teeth for evidence of grinding. During this examination, she may check for tenderness in your jaw muscles and the jaw joint.

Different Reasons for Tooth Extractions

Although permanent teeth were meant to last a lifetime, there are a number of reasons why a patient may need a tooth extracted. A very common reason involves a tooth that is too badly damaged, from trauma or decay, to be repaired. At Cynthia Wong Orthodontics, tooth extraction may be performed for orthodontic treatment. This is because people getting braces may need teeth extracted to create room for teeth that are being moved into place. You’re probably most familiar with wisdom teeth extractions, but other reasons for the procedure may include:

  • Severe tooth damage/trauma – some teeth have such extensive decay and damage (broken or cracked) that repair is not possible.

  • Some teeth may need to be extracted if they have the potential of becoming infected.

  • Extra teeth – extra teeth may block other teeth from erupting, therefore, will require extraction.

Propel Orthodontics for Faster Treatment

As technology advances, we like to advance with it to provide our patients with the best care possible. At Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics in Orland Park, IL, Dr. Cynthia Wong utilizes Propel Orthodontics to speed up orthodontic treatment time.

Propel Orthodontics is the method of using a minimally invasive device to create micro-osteoperforations in a patient’s gum tissue and bone tissue surrounding a tooth. This actually stimulates the patient’s biology to speed up the movement of the teeth.

When the perforations are made, the body responds by increasing blood flow and cytokine to the area. This allows the tooth to move quicker in response to the pressure the braces are continually applying. The perforations are micro, so the patient can continue their day afterwards as they would normally.

Since the patient’s teeth are moving faster, this equates to reducing the overall treatment time and results in fewer appointments. Propel Orthodontics can be added in combination with either braces or clear aligners like Invisalign. Propel can also be used from the beginning of treatment or added in at any time.

Straightening teeth creates a beautiful and healthy smile. To learn more about the orthodontics we provide here at Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics in Orland Park, IL, give our office a call at (708) 444-8341. More information can be found on our website, www.drcynthiawong.com

Smile for the Camera!

With instant photo sharing and selfies taking over the internet, a camera-ready smile is great to have. If you have braces, Dr. Cynthia Wong wants to flaunt that shiny smile of yours and don’t be shy. If you recently got your braces removed, we expect you to flaunt that straight smile everywhere! Here are some tips to take pictures you’ll be happy to send to your friends!

  • Be natural – when it’s picture time, smile gently. That way, your face looks relaxed. Your mouth opens slightly, and your lower lip matches the curve of your upper teeth.

  • Check your teeth and gums – getting your smile camera-ready sometimes calls for a little behind the scenes prep work. If your pearly whites have yellowed with age, try an over-the-counter whitening product or pay us a visit! Also, don’t forget about taking care of your gums. They play a critical role in your nice smile. So keep them in good shape by brushing, flossing, and rinsing with a mouthwash every day.

  • Practice – your perfect smile may not happen overnight, but if you have a big photo event like a wedding or a graduation coming up, it doesn’t hurt to try out your grin in front of the mirror!

Bad Habits to Kick While Wearing Braces

When wearing braces, it is important to steer clear of a few habits that may delay treatment. Dr. Cynthia Wong of Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics in Orland Park, IL wants her patients to know which habits to kick to the curb for healthy treatment.

Biting Fingernails and Other Non-Food Objects

Biting your fingernails is already bad for your teeth, but when you bite them while wearing braces, it could create enough pressure to cause one of your brackets to break or pop off. Even if the brackets remain intact, the pressure will make the braces less effective, therefore delaying treatment. This rule also goes for biting on pen caps, pencils, water bottles, etc. Just stick to biting food!

Hard or Crunchy Foods

Okay, so we said to stick to food. What you really should do is stick to the right foods, and avoid some of the others. Hard foods like popcorn, bagels, and raw carrots are common culprits for popping off brackets. In addition, skip the sticky stuff like chewing gum and caramels.

Brushing Too Hard

Many people think they need to apply force and really scrub their teeth to get them clean. However, all it takes is a light touch with a soft toothbrush. Scrubbing hard is not only bad for your gum tissue and enamel, but it can cause damage to a bracket or wire.

Your Daily Pop

Pop is filled with sugar that can hide in between teeth and around your brackets! Pop is also very acidic, so drinking it frequently can contribute to worn down enamel. Frequently drinking dark colas can also stain your teeth and while you have brackets on, the staining won’t reach that area of the teeth. It could result in some uneven staining. Stick to keeping pop as a treat instead of a staple in your diet.

Teeth Types and Functions

Many factors play a role in the amount of teeth we have but have you ever wondered why all teeth have different shapes? Dr. Cynthia Wong would like to take this opportunity to educate you on the types of teeth you have and the purpose they serve in your mouth!

The types of teeth and their functions are:

  • Incisors – located at the front of the mouth, these teeth have a sharp biting surface and are used for cutting or shearing food into small chewable pieces.

  • Canines – located at the ‘corners’ of the dental arches, these teeth have a sharp pointed biting surface. Their function is to grip and tear food.

  • Premolars – Unlike incisors and canines, these teeth have a flat biting surface. Their function is to tear and crush food.

  • Molars – The molars are the largest teeth in the mouth and they too have a large flat biting surface. The function of these is perhaps the strongest of all as they chew, crush, and grind food.

If you have questions about your teeth, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.drcynthiawong.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics in Orland Park, IL, call 708-444-8341.

Exercises for TMJ Pain

When suffering through TMD, it can seem like you do not want to move your jaw at all. However, there are actually exercises that can help. Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics in Orland Park, IL treats patients with TMJ pain or TMD. Take some of these jaw relaxation tips.

To improve the range of motion your jaw has, gently open and close your mouth. Do this a few times every morning and every night to see improvement over time.

To stretch your jaw, close your mouth and place your right hand on the right side of your jaw. Gently push your lower jaw into your hand. Do this a few times and then switch to the other side. Another great stretching option is to apply resistance. Place your thumb under your chin and gently press up while you open your mouth halfway; creating resistance. Do this exercise ten times.

To relieve jaw tension and relax facial muscles, smile a really big smile. Smile as wide as you can while opening your jaw about two inches. While you are smiling, take in a few deep breaths and then relax. Repeat this exercise a few times.

Relieving tension and stretching muscles can not only help with existent pain but it can also help prevent future pain flare-ups.  If you have frequent jaw pain, schedule an appointment with Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics in Orland Park, IL. Our office can be reached at (708) 444-8341. Appointments can also be made through our website, www.drcynthiawong.com

Foods to Avoid for TMJ Pain

When dealing with TMJ, it is important to know about certain habits that can trigger pain or prolong already existing pain. Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics of Orland Park, IL wants to remind our patients suffering with TMJ of what foods to avoid. We will even let you know ways around them!

To begin, crunchy and hard foods can be very aggravating to the TMJs. Popcorn and chips should be avoided. Hard foods like raw carrots and other vegetables can also irritate the TMJs because of how much force the jaw needs to exert to bite them. However, veggies should not be avoided altogether. Since they are an important part of your diet, try cooking them so they become softer and easier to chew.

Chewy foods are another type of food that should be avoided when you have TMJ difficulty. The constant chewing motion and pressure needed to chew through these foods can cause irritation. Avoid chewing gum, sticky candies, and tougher meats and seafood. Make sure you are eating a tenderer cut of meat and if you still want to eat seafood, choose a more tender option like fish.

In addition to the types of foods you should be avoiding, also, be sure to avoid putting large pieces of food in your mouth. Overextending your mouth can cause TMJ irritation. To get around this, just cut your food into smaller pieces.

TMJ may change the way you eat, but most foods are still able to be enjoyed if they are prepared in a different form. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics in Orland Park, IL, call our office at (708) 444-8341 or visit our website, www.drcynthiawong.com

TMJ/TMD Diet

Temporomandibular joint and muscle disorders involve the chewing muscles and joints that connect the lower jaw to the skull. Although TMJ is an abbreviation for the muscle, you may have a TMJ disorder (TMD) if you observe jaw discomfort and tenderness or pain when opening or closing the mouth. In addition, you may also find it uncomfortable to chew. To alleviate the pain of TMD, Dr. Cynthia Wong recommends incorporating more soft foods into your diet.

Soft food gives your jaw and temporomandibular joints the opportunity to rest and heal. Some excellent (and healthy) foods to eat include cooked vegetables and fruits, cottage cheese, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, smoothies, soup, and yogurt. If you must eat food that requires a heavy amount of chewing, we recommended chopping it up into small pieces. If you have a sweet tooth, soft cakes, cobblers and cheesecake are good things to choose from. They may not be healthy options, but they’re delicious and easy to eat!

If you experience facial pain or feel your jaw clicking when you chew certain foods, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.drcynthiawong.com for more information. Using a Tongue Scraper

Have you ever stuck your tongue out while standing in front of a mirror and noticed a white layer of film sitting atop it? If so, that coating means that you have a buildup of food particles, debris, bacteria, and dead cells on your tongue. You may also have a bout of bad breath. To solve this problem, Dr. Cynthia Wong recommends implementing a tongue scraper into your oral hygiene routine. Tongue scrapers are available in most drugstores in various shapes and sizes.

When we sleep, our digestive system remains awake, removing toxins from our body by depositing them onto the surface of our tongue. If we don’t scrape away these toxins, they get reabsorbed by the body and can lead to respiratory difficulties, digestive problems, and a compromised immune system. Once you purchase a tongue scraper, to use it you simply place the oral device at the back of your tongue and gently bring it forward along your tongue, repeating as often as needed. As a result, your breath will breath will be fresher and your mouth will feel cleaner.

If you have questions about oral hygiene and oral health, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.drcynthiawong.com for more information. To schedule an appointment at Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics in Orland Park, IL, call 708-444-8341.

When Does My Retainer Need to be Replaced?

Retainers are meant to keep your teeth in place after your braces come off. As long as the retainer is in good shape, it can prevent movement of your teeth. Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics in Orland Park, IL wants to remind our patients that retainers do need to be replaced at some point. Read on to learn the typical reasons why retainers need to be replaced.

Knowing when your retainer has seen its day will help you be prepared for when it happens. This way, you will recognize it may not be doing its job correctly and you can replace it before your teeth start to shift too much. Common reasons that retainers need to be replaced are damage and wear. If the retainer has been cracked, chewed up by either you or a curious dog, or deformed from hot water, it cannot do its job properly. In addition, your retainer will be become naturally worn down. Joints that come apart, calcification, and even looseness can be signs that your retainer is getting old. Retainers last different amounts of time for each person, so it is important to know the signs to look for.

When you notice your retainer is no longer fitting right, schedule an appointment with us so we can adjust it or make you a new one. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics of Orland Park, IL, call our office at (708) 444-8341 or visit our website, www.drcynthiawong.com

Relieving Pain Due to Braces

It’s no surprise that braces can cause some pain and discomfort. While this is common and expected, it still isn’t any fun. Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics of Orland Park, IL wants to make sure all of our patients are as comfortable as possible. Takes some tips for relieving pain while wearing braces!

Braces can cause pain in a couple of different ways. The most obvious way is due to the wires being tightened. The pain is also thought to come from the changes in blood flow that are caused by the pressure. Another source of pain can come from the metal brackets and wires rubbing up against the soft tissues in the mouth. They can create sore spots and irritated areas.

To relieve pressure pain, pain relievers like Motrin or Advil work well. You can also use topical pain relievers like Orajel. Topical pain relievers work relatively quickly. You will also want to be sure that you are eating soft foods like yogurt or soup.

To relieve soft tissue pain caused by the metal, you can purchase dental wax to place over the metal parts that rub the most. However, as the mouth gets used to having braces, the soft tissues will become calloused so the rubbing is no longer a bother. For additional relief, you should use a soft-bristled toothbrush when brushing your teeth. This way you will not irritate the soft tissues as much.

New braces and tightened wires can take some getting used to. If you are experiencing problems with your braces, do not hesitate to give Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics a call. Our Orland Park, IL office can be reached at (708) 444-8341 or through our website, www.drcynthiawong.com

Flossing after Braces

The moment has come for your braces to be removed and to have your teeth freed from wires. Though we hope you managed to maneuver floss through your braces, it’s time to remind you how to floss your teeth without them. Dental floss comes in many forms, but it won’t be effective unless you know how to use it properly. Dr. Cynthia Wong would like you to utilize these tips for effective cleaning to protect yourself from gum disease and tooth decay.

  • Break off about 18 inches of floss and wind most of it around one of your middle fingers. Wind the remaining floss around the same finger of the opposite hand. This finger will take up the floss as it becomes dirty.

  • Hold the floss tightly between your thumbs and forefingers.

  • Guide the floss between your teeth using a gentle rubbing motion. Never snap the floss into the gums.

  • When the floss reaches the gum line, curve it into a “C” shape against one tooth. Gently slide it into the space between the gum and the tooth.

  • Hold the floss tightly against the tooth. Gently rub the side of the tooth, moving the floss away from the gum with up-and-down motions. Repeat this method for the rest of your teeth and don’t forget the back ones!

Brushing after Braces

The time has come, after years of enduring orthodontic treatment, you can finally lick your teeth again without feeling an inch of metal. Though you may have grown accustomed to brushing your teeth with braces, do you remember how to brush them now that they are removed? Dr. Cynthia Wong would like to remind you to utilize these brushing tips the next time you practice proper oral hygiene.

  • Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against the gums.

  • Move the brush back and forth gently in short (tooth-wide) strokes.

  • Brush the outer tooth surfaces, the inner tooth surfaces, and the chewing surfaces of the teeth.

  • Use the tip of the brush to clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth, using a gentle up-and-down stroke.

  • Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and don’t forget to floss!

Orthodontics and Your Gums

Anyone can suffer from sensitivity, but braces wearers can be especially susceptible to it. This is because braces are more difficult to clean around, and poor oral care can lead to an irritated or receding gum line. To help prevent sensitivity, brush thoroughly after every meal and floss at least once a day. If this doesn’t work, discuss your sensitivity issues with Dr. Cynthia Wong to develop a treatment plan that best suits your needs.

It’s normal to feel some pain in your mouth after receiving new braces or regular adjustments. After all, your teeth and jaw are hard at work creating a new smile. However, when it becomes almost impossible to practice proper oral hygiene, gingivitis, the result of plaque buildup on your teeth, can lead to gum inflammation causing your braces to react to this pain. It's always important to make great oral hygiene a priority. But when you have braces, doing so can cut down on problems and irritation – making it a more comfortable experience.

If your braces are causing you discomfort, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide, visit www.drcynthiawong.com for more information. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Cynthia Wong in Orland Park, IL, call 708-444-8341.

Orthodontic Emergencies

Here at Dr. Cynthia Wong Orthodontics, we understand that accidents happen. If you experience an orthodontic emergency, as a general rule, you should always call our office as soon as the accident occurs. However, it’s also critical to remember that not all orthodontic emergencies include loose brackets, wires, or bands. The following orthodontic emergencies and their treatments are listed below and the majority of these are easily treated with a follow-up by Dr. Cynthia Wong.

    ·       Ligatures come off - If a rubber ligature should come off, you may be able to put it back in place using sterile tweezers. If a wire ligature comes loose, simply remove it with sterile tweezers. If the wire ligature is sticking out into the lip but is not loose, it may be bent back down with a Q-tip or pencil eraser to eliminate irritation.

  • Loose Brackets, Wires or Bands - If the braces have come loose in any way, the parent/guardian needs to be notified and they should call the orthodontist to determine appropriate next steps.

  • Protruding Wire - Occasionally, the end of a wire will work itself out of place and irritate the patient’s mouth. Use a Q-tip or pencil eraser to push the wire so that it is flat against the tooth. If the wire cannot be moved into a comfortable position, cover it with relief wax.

If you have an orthodontic emergency, give us a call immediately. To learn more about the services we provide, visit www.drcynthiawong.com for more information. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Cynthia Wong in Orland Park, IL, call 708-444-8341.

Benefits of Clear Braces

Crooked or misaligned teeth not only look unsightly, they can also make cleaning the teeth difficult. As adults, we may want to fix this problem however, we grow self-conscious and we don’t want metal taking over our mouth. Conventional braces can be less than attractive, decidedly uncomfortable, and painful to wear for some people. Fortunately, Dr. Cynthia Wong is an Invisalign preferred provider and can also provide clear ceramic braces to help her patients avoid that metallic look.

The benefits of clear braces extend far beyond a pretty smile. Depending on which option is best selected for you, clear aligners such as Invisalign are barely noticeable and can be removed when necessary to help patients clean their teeth a lot better than they could with wires wrapped around them. Another added benefit of clear braces, in general, is that can prevent patients from the need to invest significant amounts of money in restorations in the long run. Overall, clear braces increase your self-esteem and allow you to straighten your teeth almost invisibly.

If you are searching to straighten your smile, give us a call to discuss your orthodontic options. To learn more about the services we provide, visit www.drcynthiawong.com for more information. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Cynthia Wong in Orland Park, IL, call 708-444-8341.

What Is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that corrects teeth and jaws that are positioned improperly. Orthodontic treatments like braces help move teeth that are crooked or that do not fit together right. By fixing these problems, orthodontics can also help keep your mouth healthy because crooked teeth can be harder to clean, putting you at risk of tooth decay and periodontal disease. Dr. Wong has enjoyed a long and rewarding orthodontic career. She also specializes in Invisalign Clear Braces in addition to traditional braces.

Only your dentist or orthodontist can determine whether you can benefit from orthodontics. Based on diagnostic tools, that include a full medical and dental health history, a clinical exam, plaster molds of your teeth, and special X-rays and photographs. Straightening your teeth using orthodontics will put less stress on the chewing muscles that can lead to headaches, TMJ syndrome and neck, shoulder, and back pain. The overall benefits of orthodontics include a healthier mouth, a more pleasing appearance, and teeth that are more likely to last a lifetime.

If you are searching to straighten your smile, give us a call to discuss your orthodontic options. To learn more about the services we provide, visit www.drcynthiawong.com for more information. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Cynthia Wong in Orland Park, IL, call 708-444-8341.
